2005 Re-cap...so far...
So far, the August 16th reading had been the closest we’ve come to feeling
at home in our new SF home. It was a wild and crazy night that started off
with our band, Nova Jazz, lead by Daniel. His return from NYC brought good
energy to Club Deluxe. Ingrid and I arrived thinking we’d be the first
ones there and were welcomed by a big crowd of friendly and familiar faces
as well as some new ones!
Justin started off the night by passing around a piece of paper and everyone
wrote a line of poetry, which he read later on that night. An inventive Ronn
oooh’d and ahhh’d us with his sound-on-the-page poem, and Danilee
whipped the band into a poetic frenzy. Jesse thrilled us with his tirade about
a really bad poem, and it was bad—and you know we mean bad ass!!! Nicole
Henares celebrated the illustrious city of Carmel and childhood memories of
the Olympics.
The week after we were hit with the famous Bambi Lake dancing on chairs and
singing with the band, while Daniel stood on chairs blowing his sax. Jerry
read an amazing piece about super heroes. Ozzy rocked us with a poem about
a cat and an interpretive dance performance by Moe Saint Evergreen. We also
celebrated Nicole’s birthday with a sweet little chocolate cake—yuummm!
Our Word Party poet laureate, William Taylor Jr. read some poems from his
chapbook Any Abyss Will Do and drank some beers (which he will do
if given half the chance).
Iris came to sing and graced us with her sassy brand of “Sugar.”
Our Nova Jazz quartet has been keeping the energy on a high note, ending with
a loud boom of musicians joining to jam. It just keeps getting better…
A warm thank you to all the poets and musicians who came out to make the past
few weeks a special, wild collaborative effort.
Hope to
see you next week!!!
