May
– July 2007 Re-cap...
In our post-Poetry month frenzy the WORDparty was super BUSY! In May and June
we had two special events at Club Deluxe: The first was our very first POETRY
SWAP! (We borrowed the idea from none other than our favorite E.K. Keith!)
All the poets came and handed in their typed-up and sometimes hand-written
verse. It was fun to hear someone read your poems and perform each others
work! < See Guinevere and #1 swapping verse.
In June we had our first
Jazz cat in the Hat event. Our resident jazz jam musicians put their
names in hat and each poet randomly picked a musician to be paired with on
their piece. It was lots of fun and even the musicians surprised us and read
some poems!
In preparation for our
2-Year Anniversary party, we had a Button
design Contest! Musicians and poets alike entered their designs and we
gave it to the audience to decide. Kyle Knobel was our winner and we handed
out the buttons to everyone who walked through the doors at our Anniversary
Party. Click here to see the entries.
Before our anniversary
party we also had a special event to celebrate Pablo
Neruda's 103rd birthday at The Red Poppy Arthouse. Click
here to read the details and see photos from our sold-out event!
Which brings us to our
TWO-YEAR ANNIVERSARY PARTY! And what a party it was. We handed out buttons
at the door, we had balloons, Ingrid baked tiny cupcakes for everyone, Daniel
ruled the "free beer" quiz, we read poetry, got down to hot jazz
with the Nova Jazz Quartet & jam and partied bigtime!!! It was a packed
house! Besides a night of stellar performances, we had our annual WORDparty
Awards ceremony throughout the night. We hand-picked our favorite poets
& musicians and the audience picked their favorites for our People's Choice
Awards. Click here to see a complete list
of the winners!
We want to thank all
the poets and jazz musicians who make WORDparty Tuesdays the special night
that it is. We even wrote a Cut-up poem in dedication of our night read by
Ingrid and Jennifer at the beginning of the open mic. See below, Enjoy!:
Here's
to another year of poetry & jazz!

Wordparty Tuesdays
– A Cut-up Poem
by Ingrid Keir & Jennifer Barone
Push past the sage & white porcelain tiles
Enter through the steel door
like a portal,
On a famous corner in San Francisco
is a little place called Club Deluxe
for deluxe inspiration
deluxe no hesitation
deluxe talented butts filled with guts
and truck loads of poetry and jazz up late on Tuesday nights
I am transported to the place
where creativity thrives
on barstools and floorboards
With paper and pen scribbling next to neon
or clicking keys typed up neatly
or carried in their minds like magicians
pull tricks from under their sleeves
the air is thick with candle wax and
crushed mint waits at the bottom of a glass
Daniel starts it off with loud notes from his horn
Colin picks it up on the dark wood & strings
Sajan blends it all together; alchemy on the keys
Rick finishes it smoothly on the skins
As the bass player's
tapping
the curvy shape of a wooden woman's body
as poets spit words in a warm womb of wooden walls
a saxophone moans and a trombone too
and the dirty muted trumpet will
tempt you into creative fits fit to print
There are layers upon layers of us,
music & poetry lovers
blend it all together
at Wordparty Tuesdays
in an elixir of words and notes
as the beginners mix with the seasoned
And maybe you're sitting in the corner kind of shy
you've either got your ears perked or you're rolling your eyes
but I'd like to see you get up on this stage one day and give it a try
where singers cry and poets shout to the back of the bar
but whatever you like to sing or say
make it juicy, make it good, transport me
because we've been doing this for a very long time
from Brooklyn New York to San Francisco bay
and we're giving you about 5 minutes to blow us away
And as the jazz musicians hit high & low notes
and metaphors swirl in between my eyebrows
and circle my arms, legs,
and wrap around the microphone
Like Reinaldo on
who whistles like a human horn section
and Daniel with his sax can make you cry or dance
Jimmy has a new alias but his verse will make you think
even though he's over the time limit every week!
Colin swings with poets and walks the bass like a dog
James will blow you out of your seat with his funky trombone
We have Carl, Geordie, Sajan, Micha, Ross and Rick who hit it hard
We've got Jonathan who'll melt your heart
and Tatiana brings her soul and #1 tries new things
Hanna gets on the mic to belt a song to make you sing
We have Charlie and Guinevere who know how to shout out loud
and Jessie loves to play with words but he don't play with sound
Steven gray likes a slow rap and Ingrid gives them all a hand
Shout outs to Ozzy up in heaven, but he's here in spirit
We have so many fresh faces like Martin and Missy
Who knows what will happen next year!
I stand here and recognize
the life you breathe into instruments
be it a pen or a horn it pulsates
My heart beat beating beat beating
We are TWO!! and THANK YOU!!!
