Christine’s poetic
musings began in her Bensonhurst, Brooklyn ‘hood when her godmother
presented her with her first journal and a subscription to a book club at
eight years old, starting a life-long habit of losing herself in words—her
own and others. Her first serious literary collaboration was with Jennifer
(see Roots for more info) in high school—and
she was thrilled to discover that there were other people in the world (like
fellow poet Nick Accetura and poet & musician James Criscitiello) who
were interested in the things she was…poetry, art, music, and craziness
in general.
One of the most memorable moments was one of the first times she heard spoken
word by Lydia Lunch and Kathleen Hanna at a feminist rally at ABC No Rio in
NYC; it was poetry that was shockingly personal, intimate, and honest—but
it was also a social commentary on the world. Not long after, she self-published
her fanzine Bitch on Wheels.
Later on, Christine met Steven Baker, Douglas Duncan and Ingrid Keir at Brooklyn
College (see Roots for the whole story) and not long
after they had converged to form a poetry collective called Brokeland—The
Word Party’s first incarnation—of which Christine was one of the
founding members.
Finally performing spoken word—either alone or accompanied by the Kerry
Brown Jazz Trio—she began taking a more critical approach to her work,
attempting to par down her language and cut away the excess—leaving
only self-reflective and emotionally charged free verse that sometimes brutally
shocked with its honest and sarcastic observations, and she’s continued
to develop a voice which has become more and more uniquely her own. She collaborated
with drummer Doug Richardson on a spoken word piece titled “Drumhead”—paying
homage to the love that Doug has for his drums (which are female)—which
they performed at Mobay in Harlem and also at Via Della Pace.
Arriving at The Word Party, she feels, is the culmination of all of her inspiring
and creative friends whom she’s surrounded herself with her whole life—this
meeting of the minds and spirits is an invocation to the muses....
Christine currently works as a production editor and has worked on various
freelance editorial projects. Check out her recently self-published chap-book
