POETRY LIKE BREAD
THE HISTORY OF MY HEART
OH
JENNIFER
WE
MUST NEVER HAVE A FIGHT
Poetry,
Like Bread, is for Everyone
—pablo neruda, as
seen in city lights
give me bread
let me chomp on the round corner
of be—
satisfied
stupefied
be still
nourish me
i’ve been eating peanut butter
and jelly sandwiches
i can’t afford
cole valley cafés these days
gone are dusty piles of cash
in virtual bank vaults
i’m rich in love
and full of poetic panini
tiramisu—
i need a pick me up
send me your soul fiesta
give me little crumbs
lead me to the bakery of your heart
i take tiny morsels
and stitch myself a cookie
take this sweaty dough
and make a woman and a man
take these slices of bread
and put the world between them
biting hard
as crumbs fall down your chest
the pigeons eat them
and are uplifted
