Q. How is the night set-up?
A. The Nova Jazz quartet kicks off our night with a set of jazz. There are two sets of poetry and a jazz jam in between which is open to jazz musicians and singers. Poetry sign-up starts at 8:30pm and the reading starts around 9:15pm. There is a third set of jazz, if we have time.

Q. How do I sign-up to read or play?
A. We have a sign-up at 8:30 with Jennifer and Ingrid, come and find us when you arrive at the center of the club. Let us know if you want the band to back you up, give us your e-mail and say hello! Jazz musicians don't need to sign the list, just speak to Daniel who plays tenor sax and let him know you want to jam after their first set.

Q. Is the open mic only for poetry and jazz?
A. The open mic sign-up is for poetry ONLY. We do not allow singer / songwriters or long short stories or novels, we keep it strictly poetry & jazz. Musicians play standards and solos called by the band leader or bring charts for the band.

Q. What if I don't want to read with a jazz band?
A. You have the option to read with or without back-up, we may switch around poets on the list to give our band a break.

Q. How long of a time slot do I get?
A. Our list gets filled up pretty quickly, we have a time slot of 3 minutes and suggest you arrive at 8:30pm to get a good slot. Please do not bug the hosts about where you are on the list, we reserve the right to change the order to make sure the band gets a break. Also we do not run on an exact-to-the-second time schedule, but we run a tight show. Please be prepared when you are called and be respectful—please come to listen as well as perform.

Q. Do you have featured poets or musicians?
A. Normally we do not feature a poet or jazz musician, we have only an open mic, but from time-to-time we have featured events, either at Club Deluxe or at other venues. Please see the homepage for more details.

WORDPARTY ETIQUETTE
Although we generally fly by the seat of our pants, time has shown us that there are certain actions we'd rather not have at the club. Here are some of the rules of etiquette:

1. Do not YELL into the microphone, it hurts people's ears. If you yell, don't use the mic. Also, please use the mic if you are a low-talker. People actually want to hear you.

2. Don't go over the time limit (3 minutes/1 poemif it's a full list.) Be respectful of your fellow poets who are also waiting to read or perform. It is nice when a poet checks in after a long piece with the hosts to see if it's okay to continue due to time.

3. Please be prepared to come up when we call your name or else we will skip you or push you to the back of the list. We don't like to chase after poets so don't take a cigarette break when it's around your time to perform! be prepared to show us what you got!

4. Do not yell at or bug the hosts about where you are on the list. Be nice, we work hard.

5. There is no censorship at our open mic. We believe in freedom of speech. Don't hold back!!! Have fun!!! We do!!!
